On Sunday, London will host the FIRST ever Women’s Champions Cup final!
The new tournament has seen the best women’s clubs from around the world compete for a new piece of silverware, and the final four are Arsenal, Gotham FC, AS FAR, and SC Corinthians.
Following Wednesday’s semi-final matches at Brentford Stadium, AS FAR and Gotham FC will battle it out for third place while Arsenal and SC Corinthians will fight for the trophy.
The first semi final was a face off between Brazilian side, Corinthians, and American side, Gotham, and although the Americans were the better side, Corinthian’s captain Gabi Zanotti scored the decisive goal. With both sides in their off-seasons, neither one had the advantage which was proved with only three shots on target between the sides.
As well as missing out on the final, Gotham lost two players to injury. Gabi Portilho received treatment in the first half for a foot injury before being forced off early in the second half, and team captain, Rose Lavelle, also left the pitch over concussion concerns.
The other semi-final was a battle between European Champions Arsenal and Morocco’s AS FAR Rabat. The second game of the day wasn’t quite as tight, taking only 21 minutes for the Gunners to be 3-0 up. Despite the large scoreline, overall possession wasn’t massively different, with Arsenal at 56.3% and AS FAR at 43.7%. Goals from Stina Blackstenius, Frida Maanum, Mariona Caldentey, Olivia Smith and Alessia Russo (2), gave Arsenal the convincing win to progress to the final.
Arsenal had some heavy squad rotation for this fixture, with Smilla Holmberg making her first Arsenal start, as well as the return of Chloe Kelly, who came off the bench to replace Olivia Smith after recovering from an injury she’s been handling for the past few months.
Both the third place play off (2:45pm), and the final (6pm) will be hosted at Emirates Stadium. If you are unable to be in the stands for either game, then you can watch them live on Sky Sports Main Event (UK).
