UWNL Final Preview: Germany vs Spain

Published on 28 November 2025 at 16:30

At 8pm on Friday 28th November Germany will host Spain in the first leg of the Nations league final at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion. There are two legs for this final, and the second leg will be played just four days later at Atletico Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium.

During the semi-finals Spain beat Sweden 5-0 on aggregate and Germany beat France 3-2 on aggregate to claim their places in the final. For the semifinals Germany didn’t have Beerger as she was out due to injury but she is now back a part of the squad after winning the NWSL with her club Gotham FC.

Last year Spain won the Nations league earning them their second major trophy in six months after they won the World Cup against England. Both Germany and Spain played England in the Euros finals and England won both times, in 2022 they beat Germany 2-1 and earlier this year England beat Spain in the final on penalties. Before the England v Spain final, Spain played Germany 1-0 in the semi-finals after Aitana Bonmati’s goal in extra time. Spain will be heading into the first leg as the favorites.

Both teams are missing some key players. Spain are without one of their key midfielders Patri Guijarro and Germany are without Camilla Küver, Sydney Lohmann and Lea Schüller. Germany have called up Bibiane Schulze Solan and Linda Dallmann to make up for the absences, as well their Captain Giulia Gwinn is back to her best after coming back from a serious injury.

Since Spain have won the World Cup in 2023 and the Nations League in 2024 their squad has changed, having Barcelona defender Mapi León back representing her national team she’ll also help strengthen Spain's back line.

It's Sonia Berúdez’s first chance to win some silverware from Spain after she replaced Montse Tomé as Spain's coach in October. World champions and last year's Nations league winners take on 8 time European Champions.
