WSL Preview: Liverpool vs Manchester City

Published on 11 October 2025 at 20:32

Tomorrow, Liverpool will welcome Manchester City to Anfield for gameweek six in the WSL. The Reds currently sit in 11th in the table, with the Citizens nine places ahead in 2nd. However, Liverpool do remain one match behind, due to their previous match against Aston Villa being postponed as a result of Matt Beard’s passing.

Liverpool haven’t had the best start to this season, with the combined impact of the passing of their former manager and the fact that they’ve lost all of their opening games. In just four matches, they have conceded eight goals, with their biggest loss coming against Everton in their first match where they lost 4-1. Last season, The Reds finished 7th overall, having won seven matches in total. Their only goal this season came from Cornelia Kapocs, however in the Subway League Cup they managed to get five goals past Sunderland, with two coming from Sophie Haug, and one each from Gemma Evans, Jenna Clark and Man City loanee Risa Shimizu. This range of talent in the league cup highlights how Liverpool do have the capability to succeed in the WSL and beyond.

The visitors, in comparison, have been in considerably better form in comparison to the hosts. Man City have won four out of five of their matches so far this season, and only picked up a 2-1 loss to last season’s Champions, Chelsea, in their opening fixture. They have managed to score 15 goals in total so far this season, with their top scorer being Bunny Shaw, who has contributed 4 of those. With strong attacking players such as Clinton, Miedema, and Shaw, the Citizens are a force to be reckoned with.

Head-to-head, these two teams have played each other a total of 33 times, with Manchester City winning 23 of them, and Liverpool only having won 8, meaning that it looks likely that Man City will come off victorious again tomorrow.

It’s a later kick-off tomorrow at 4:45pm at Anfield, and if you aren’t attending then the match is available to stream on Sky Sports.
