WSL: Aston Villa v Liverpool Preview

Published on 20 September 2025 at 23:03

Today, Aston Villa will take on Liverpool in the third round of the new WSL season. Having only played a few matches yet this season with renewed squads from the summer transfer window it will be interesting to see how these sides face off against each other.

Aston Villa have had a somewhat disappointing start to the season, coming into this match off the back of a nil-nil draw with Brighton in their opening match and a 3-1 loss to last season’s champions, Chelsea, at home last weekend. Having signed Ellie Roebuck from Barcelona over the summer transfer window, could we see her start again in place of Sabrina D’Angelo who didn’t start last weekend's match as she picked up a minor injury. Ebony Salmon has got the Villains’ only goal so far this season, picking up a goal against Chelsea in the 34th minute of their last match. The team finished 6th last season, with a range of mixed results against all teams, so it will be interesting to see whether or not they will be able to match or beat this table position this season or not.

Liverpool have lost both of their matches so far this season, conceding a total of five goals against them in total. Having faced both Leicester City and Everton so far it will be interesting to see what happens when they face Aston Villa who will likely have higher aspirations for themselves this season. Having lost Olivia Smith and Taylor Hinds to Arsenal over the transfer window, it could be that the Reds are lacking in their attacking range and skill after losing these two players. They only finished one place behind the Villains last season, so it looks like it could be a closely matched fixture tomorrow at Villa Park.

Head-to-head, Liverpool have had more wins over Aston Villa, but there has been a significant number of draws between the two sides over the years, providing even more evidence that this will be a really closely matched fixture.

Kick-off is at 12pm tomorrow and if you’re unable to attend the match at Villa Park then it is available to watch on Sky Sports.
