Azerbaijan Grand Prix: What You Need to Know Before Race Day

Published on 20 September 2025 at 22:58

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix takes place on the streets of Baku. Baku isn’t a traditional track like we see at Silverstone or Suzuka. It is the latest street track on the calendar joining Monaco, Singapore and Melbourne. Charles Leclerc holds the record for the most pole positions at Baku.

Going into turn 1 the width of the straight allows three cars to race alongside each other which builds anticipation before turn 2. From turn 2 onwards the drivers race through Icheri Sheher old town. Sector one is full of lengthy straights followed by a winding sector two and a difficult third sector.

Baku as a track has low levels of grip which would usually call for a one stop strategy however, according to Pirelli’s preview the tyres for this season suffer from less graining so that opens up the possibility of a two stop strategy during Sunday’s race.

Going into this weekend McLaren have the opportunity to wrap up the 2025 Teams Championship. Could Leclerc give Ferrari the opportunity to score more points by securing pole position during Saturday’s qualifying? Will there be a head-to-head battle between the McLarens or will it be a head-to-head battle between the resurgence of Red Bull and championship leaders McLaren? Will Mercedes make an unexpected podium appearance? Here’s to the ever-interesting streets of Azerbaijan and the possible end of the 2025 Teams Championship.
