Coffey is an American international and has represented her country at the biggest level. She made her debut for the American national team in 2022 against Nigeria and since then has 42 appearances for her national team. Sam Coffey was a part of the SheBelieves Cup 2024 winning team, CONCACAF women’s gold Cup winning team in both 2022 and 2024, and the 2024 Olympic team and was a key player in helping America claim that gold medal. Manchester City have signed Sam from Portland Thorns who won the NWSL with Portland Thorns in 2022 and last year captained the team to the NWSL play-off semi-finals. She was also named as part of the NWSL Best XI 3 times across 4 seasons.

She has now gone to Manchester City who sit at the top of the WSL points, being 10 points above Arsenal (who Sam Coffey has shown her love and support for in the past) and are 6 points ahead of reigning champions Chelsea who have won it the last 6 years in a row. The 27-year-old midfielder will be a key asset for Manchester City and may help them to end the run of Chelsea winning the WSL. At Manchester City Sam will continue to wear the number 17.

Last year Manchester City didn’t manage to make the top three in the WSL missing out of champions league football however this season Manchester City are looking stronger and are at a good chance to win the league, and their new signing this may be their season. This weekend Manchester City will face AFC Bournemouth away in the fourth round of the FA Cup, and it could be a great opportunity for Sam Coffey to make her debut in English football.
