Sarina Wiegman has announced her England squad for upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Australia

Today’s squad announcement is the first since England retained their European title in July, and the squad looks very different to the one that travelled to Switzerland. Several key players are missing due to injury and there are a few new faces to the squad as well.

One of the first names fans will be looking for will be Lucy Bronze after she revealed she played the Euros with a fractured tibia. She has been included in the squad despite only playing a few minutes against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Sarina has confirmed that she is available but will not play the full two games as she has only just finished her rehabilitation. Whilst Bronze is key for England, monitoring her minutes will give Sarina the chance to experiment with different players.

Captain Leah Williamson (knee) and Lauren James (ankle) are also absent from the squad this month, both still recovering from injuries they picked up in the Euros final.  Lauren Hemp is another one missing due to an ankle injury, hers however was not picked up on international duty and instead in Manchester City’s league win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Niamh Charles recovered just in time from her ankle injury to start for Chelsea in the WSL last weekend and has been included in the squad. Grace Clinton however was not included in Manchester City’s squad this past weekend due to a knock, but has been selected for camp, her injury will be assessed further at St George’s Park.

Youngster Katie Reid is one of the new faces in camp this month after an impressive start to the season. She has represented England through the age groups and made her under-23 debut in February of this year, at just 19 years old. Due to injury at Arsenal, Reid has been Renee Sleger’s first choice to partner Steph Catley at centre-back this season, and her performances have led her to this moment. Sarina says, “She started playing for Arsenal very quickly this season, with already a couple moments last season.

“She’s done good in the pathway too and I just see some very good things on the pitch with her. I hope she can show that in our environment too.”

Lucia Kendall is another new face in this month’s camp. Sarina identified her for her positioning and game understanding at Aston Villa after her summer move from Southampton. Like Reid, Kendall has also represented England through the age groups, making her debut for the under-23s back in October 2023. Sarina says, “At the moment, I see her as a midfielder, I think she has performed really well for Aston Villa and I really want to see her there.

“I think her positioning and game understanding is really good – her game understanding, reading the game really well, being tough in duels but also in possession doing well.”

Finally, Taylor Hinds is the last new face to join up with the squad. Hinds also represented England through the youth levels but unlike Reid and Kendall, she switched allegiances to Jamaica for senior level. After receiving only one call up to the senior squad in October 2024 and talks with Sarina, she has switched back to play for England. In a statement on Instagram, Hinds says “I’m still officially an England player and have grown up through the system. I have nothing but the utmost respect and appreciation for Jamaica – they’ve been so understanding and genuinely want the best for me, which means a lot.”

Sarina says, “We have been following Taylor for a long time, of course she has gone through the pathway. She has a dual heritage, so she’s eligible for us. I had the conversation with her, and she wanted to come in. She feels really close to England which she had also with Jamaica.”
