TRANSFER NEWS: Marcus Rashford's move to Barcelona progresses as he completes medical

Published on 23 July 2025 at 11:21

The Manchester United forward travelled to Barcelona over the weekend after the two clubs reached an agreement, with talks progressing swiftly throughout the previous week. The deal is a 12-month loan that includes the option to buy at the end of the 2025/26 season, however this will most likely be triggered based on the success that Rashford can bring to the La Liga side.

The 27-year-old has certainly been out of favour at Old Trafford, particularly since Ruben Amorim’s arrival, as he believed Rashford was lacking in effort and motivation. He joined Aston Villa on loan for the second half of last season, during which we saw sparks of his former capabilities. Rashford will be seeking a club that he can call home but will need to impress for Barcelona to consider him a part of their long-term plans.

How will Rashford slot into Hansi Flick’s squad?

Barcelona are not a team who struggle to score goals, with a squad brimming with talent and attacking flair. Raphinha mainly operated on the left side of the attack, contributing 18 goals and 9 assists in the 2024/25 La Liga season. Rashford will not only provide competition for the Brazilian, but the pair will also be able to leverage each other’s abilities to improve their individual games.

The England international can also operate as a centre-forward, which is key for Barcelona given that Lewandowski is now 36 years old and unlikely to start every game. They will want a hungry forward who is looking to prove himself, and Rashford certainly fits that description after being out of favour for so long.

His versatility will benefit Barcelona as Flick further moulds his squad, with Rashford hoping to cement himself as part of the manager’s long-term plans.

What’s next for Rashford and Barcelona?

Upon passing his medical, Rashford is set to be presented as a Barcelona player this week, with all parties agreed on the deal. The forward will be eager to make an immediate impact and prove himself in La Liga, with this being a deal that fans will be intrigued and excited about. For Rashford, this is a chance to revitalise his career at a top European club, making it an important season for the 28-year-old.
