The summer transfer window has been a busy one for the entire Premier League, but reigning champions Liverpool have led the way in terms of spending. The Reds have made six signings so far, spending a grand total of around £270 million this summer.
After flying to the Premier League title last season, Liverpool have continued their business in the transfer market, especially since losing key players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. Their squad was slightly depleted, but being the biggest spenders in the 2025 transfer window has allowed them to replenish their squad to fight for the chance to retain the title.
Despite them all being fairly impressive signings, the main transfers that took the headlines was the signing of Bayer Leverkusen duo Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz. The pair impressed during their time at the Bundesliga club, with Wirtz achieving 30 goal contributions (G+A) in 45 games in all competitions last season and Frimpong scoring 5 and assisting 9 throughout the entire 2024/25 campaign. The pair cost around £145m, making up over half of their spending in this transfer window. Frimpong will replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who departed the club to join Real Madrid. He offers an attacking outlet during counter-attacks with his pace and ability to utilise the full width of the pitch, so we will probably see him operate as a more attacking full-back. Wirtz will operate as an attacking midfielder as we saw in their Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace, in which he assisted Hugo Ekitike.
The champions of England also managed to secure the signing of Bournemouth full-back Milos Kerkez on a five-year deal, who shone brightly in an impressive Bournemouth side last year led by Andoni Iraola. The defender started all 38 top-flight games for The Cherries last campaign, racking up 2 goals and 5 assists. At the age of just 21, Kerkez has made a lasting impression on the Premier League after just 2 seasons in English football, and will undoubtedly continue to develop and improve his overall game.
Given the departures of Darwin Nunez and Luiz Diaz, the signing of Hugo Ekitike became all the more important to Liverpool. Liverpool signed the forward in a deal worth £79 million (£69 million plus £10 million in add ons) after they were informed of Newcastle’s reluctance to sell Alexander Isak. Ekitike formed a great partnership with Omar Marmoush at Eintracht Frankfurt in the first half of 2024/25 season, before Manchester City swooped in for Marmoush, forcing Frankfurt into tactical changes, but this did not affect the versatile forward given his tactical awareness. Based on his statistics last season, many compare his style of play to Alexander Isak, which is understandable due to Liverpool’s failed pursuit of the Newcastle player. However, the young forward will need to adapt to the Premier League and Liverpool’s style of play, but he is an exciting talent that will no doubt be a joy to watch.
Liverpool kick off the 2025/26 season on Friday at 20:00 BST live on Sky Sports, where you can watch all of their new signings as they face Bournemouth at Anfield.
