It was a historic day for British Formula 1 driver, Lando Norris who raced to his first home win at Silverstone today. Norris, who currently sits 2nd in the World Drivers Championship for Mclaren lined up on race day in P3 behind teammate Oscar Piastri and current World Champion, Max Verstappen. After costly mistakes under multiple safety cars for Piastri in a chaotic first half of the race, Norris was left to take pole position, finishing with a gap of +6.812s to Piastri.
Norris’ win is his first back-to-back win of the season after his stunning victory in Austria last week and cuts the gap between Norris and his Australian teammate at the top of the World Drivers Championship to just 8 points. The Mclaren 1-2 at Silverstone also extends Mclaren’s lead at the top of the Constructors Championship at the halfway point of the 24-race season.
Speaking on the team radio on his slow down lap, Norris reflected emotionally “This is a dream winning at home, thanks for the memory. I will remember this more than anything.". Norris becomes one of 13 British drivers to win at their home track of Silverstone, following in the footsteps of legendary drivers such as Lewis Hamilton, Nigel Mansell and Jackie
Stewart. His win for Mclaren today also makes him the first Mclaren driver to win at the British Grand Prix since Lewis Hamilton in 2008 making it a historic day for everyone at Mclaren.
Norris will be looking to maintain his winning streak at the Belgian Grand Prix in 2 weeks' time as he aims to close the gap between himself and Piastri as the gap between the Mclaren pair for the World Champion spot draws closer than ever.
