Next week, the Gtech Community Stadium in Brentford will host the World Sevens tournament, and here is everything you need to know before the tournament kicks off.

What is World Sevens Football?

The tournament is a 7v7 format played on a reduced pitch size, with rolling substitutions and no offside, each game will be 30 minutes long consisting of two 15-minute halves. Eight Barclays Women’s Super League teams will take part in the seven-a-side tournament running from the 28-30 May. 15 matches will be played across the three days with the group stages on 28th and 29th May and semi-finals and final on 30th May. The tournament’s aim is to provide a fast-paced environment of elite football to a new generation of fans as part of the expansion of women’s football.

The total prize money for the tournament is $1.5 million, this money will be split between the winners ($500,000), runners up ($250,000) and semi-finalists (remainder of the prize money). Top four teams will split their prize money equally between the club and the players and staff, as confirmed by the tournament organisers. This means that not only are players awarded for their performances, but clubs will also be rewarded with money to reinvest into bettering their facilities. With the prize money as high as it is, it makes World Sevens Football one of the most financially rewarding women’s football tournaments.

Which teams will be taking part?

This morning Chelsea were announced as the eighth and final team taking part, joining London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and London City Lionesses, as well as Aston Villa, Manchester United, Everton and Leicester City.
